Is Toffee Vegan? Plant-Based Alternatives
No - traditional toffee is not vegan, because its defining ingredient is dairy butter (and chocolate-covered versions often use milk chocolate), but you can make fully plant-based toffee by swapping in vegan butter or refined coconut oil and dairy-free chocolate.

What it means
- Classic toffee is essentially sugar cooked with real dairy butter, so the standard version contains milk and is not suitable for vegans or the strictly dairy-free.
- Milk-chocolate coatings and butterfat add a second dairy source; dark chocolate is sometimes vegan but can still contain milk, so labels must be checked.
- Plant-based toffee is very achievable: high-fat vegan butter sticks or refined coconut oil brown and behave much like butter at the hard-crack stage.
- Because milk is a major allergen, US products must declare it on the label under FALCPA, which makes spotting dairy in packaged toffee straightforward.
